Pencil, Chinese ink & human hair on paper, Frame. 2008
Hair is a prominent and distinct feature of every individual, where one’ personality can possibly be derived from it, albeit to various extents. It also contains our unique DNA, and in a romantic sense; holds our bodily scent. This self portrait features my hair and the afore mentioned associations with it. In rendering the image of my hair on paper, I have used sketching pencils for the details, painted with chinese ink using a brush made out of a bunch of my own hair, and sparsely glued on hints of actual hair I detached from my head in full length. It is then framed with Baroque embellishments, but with the image moving out of the frame, reflecting the Baroque characteristic of the story extending beyond the the formalities of the frame. This is indicative of a self portrait always having more to tell, and the difficulty of fully capturing the representation of one’s existence in its entirety.
